MAKING A HORIZONTAL SUNDIAL
To make a horizontal sundial the first step is to determine the latitude and longitude of its location. This is done by using the recipients postcode.
Different latitudes result in different hour angles on the dial face. We keep four latitude templates in our art department, 50º - 52º, 52º - 54º, 54º - 56º and 56º - 58º.
The horizontal sundial can be customised to suit your personal preferences. This means that you are able to select the size, material, finish, the colour of the infill and a motto or dedication. This information is given to the art department who create the final template. The dial face is then cut to size and the etching process takes place. Acid etching produces fine detail which otherwise could not be created using traditional engraving methods. The dial face is then finished and infilled.
A gnomon of the correct angle is chosen from our stock. This is matched with one of our sand cast buttresses and both items are drilled, tapped, polished and mounted on the dial face.
The dial face is not drilled for fixing to the plinth, we recommend using a good quality adhesive such as Araldite or Sikaflex.

A basic dial is 10" dia. and comes with the motto: AMIDST THE FLOWERS I TELL THE HOURS, the equation of time graph , the date and the compass point N, at the noon point. Variations of this are readily available as extras. For instance, to change the motto to a dedication for a birthday or anniversary is £15.00 extra. (up to 30 characters).
