The armillary sphere is perhaps the most impressive of all sundials. Because of its unique shape, this beautiful instrument marks time in a purer way than all other sundials, the hour divisions being spaced equally along its equatorial ring. First used by the ancient Greeks as an aid to astronomy, todays modern armillary is an easy to use sundial that will provide its user with a gateway to enter into the world of gnomonics - the science of dialling, and will also serve as a visually striking feature in the garden.
The material used for armillary spheres is brass bar, ranging from 40 x 6mm to 15 x 6mm, held together at the junction of each ring by specially formed brass rivets invisible to the naked eye when finished.
This model was exhibited at the British Sundial Society conference where it was praised for its construction and quality of craftsmanship.
